It’s been some time since I have tasted Katnook Estate’s top offering, the “Odyssey” from Coonawarra. The winery underwent an ownership change in 2020 from Spanish giant Henkell-Freixenet to private equity owned Accolade, owner of Hardys, among other brands. The 2019 vintage has a modest beginning, lacking in intensity. It has light aromas of earth, the typical Coonwarra terroir iron character, with licorice and menthol too. The palate builds with time. Initial characters of bitterness and oak dust give way to a medium bodied expression of cabernet sauvignon. It lacks the stuffing of a very good wine, but it has an elegance that reminds of a Yarra Valley cabernet and its medium body will reward current drinking. Some earlier vintage reviews are below. Rating: Good (★★★☆, 89 points). Website: Katnook Estate. Tasted: September 2023.
