Château Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac is one of the more approachable of the Bordeaux cru classés. This estate is reported to have improved in recent vintages, having become organic in 2019 and then biodynamic in 2021. I typically see these labels as proxies for producer ambition, rather than necessarily techniques casually leading to higher quality. Generally speaking, however, they do correlate with quality and reassure for that reason. This wine is from the 2019 vintage which is a ripe, top vintage in Bordeaux. In the glass, the wine has distinct aromas of cedar and dark, ripe blackcurrants. The palate is dark fruited too, yet medium bodied. There is some tannic bitterness on the finish. In context, this may point to some extra extraction to complement ripe fruit from the 2019 vintage. It is however a little “separate” and therefore in my view mildly misjudged. Overall, however, this is a very good wine suitable for drinking over the next decade. Review Rating: Good to Very Good (★★★☆, 89 points). Website: Château Haut-Bages Libéral. Tasted: May 2026.
