Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral Pauillac 2003

2003 was a hot vintage in Bordeaux, and I’ve found a number of good wines in it.  The 2003 vintage of Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral, usually one of the more affordable of the cru classé, has a deep ruby-garnet colour befitting its season.  Its aromatics are of cigar box, cassis, bay leaf and some warmer characters of anise and olive.  The palate reminds of blackcurrants, cigar box and bay leaf, with some iron and blood characters with time in the glass.  It has medium length and a balanced finish.  I could drink this all day.  Good

Abv: 13%
Price: $60s

Tasted: 2013, 2014

Note: I have tasted three bottles of this wine now; the second conformed to the above description.  The third had a greater depth of flavour and structure and is undoubtedly a superior wine that I would rate as “very good”.
