Mount Mary are one of the Yarra Valley’s leading producers. The “Quintet” is their most famous wine, and is capable of long ageing. It is therefore not normally advisable to do what I have just done, which is to open a young vintage like this 2022 Quintet. Except it turns out that the 2022 Quintet is in fact compelling and delicious at this stage of its development and so, well, the normal advice has a large asterisk in this case. The wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (50%), merlot (25%), cabernet franc (15%), malbec (5%), and petit verdot (5%). In the glass, there are aromas of cedar oak, clove and blackcurrants. The middle palate is its most attractive feature. it is plump and the length on the finish is long. The only question is whether this vintage is in fact already ready to drink, very early. Certainly, you will not regret it. However, Mount Mary produce long lived wines and accordingly this Quintet should age and improve over the next decade and beyond.
