Yeringberg Wine Review

Yeringberg 2013 Review

Yeringberg are one of the Yarra Valley’s leading producers. Their history is, more or less, the history of the Yarra Valley in Victoria. Vines were initially planted in 1863, with production ceasing in 1921. The Yeringberg vineyard was re-established again in 1969, now some 57 years ago. There is a useful historical summary on their website, here. For more on the Yarra Valley’s wine history, I would recommend three books covering this in quite different styles. They are David Dunstan’s “Better than Pommard! A history of wine in Victoria” (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 1994), James Halliday’s, “Wines & Wineries of Victoria” (University of Queensland Press, 1982) and Max Allen’s “Yarra Valley Wine Guide” (1999), the latter found for $8 at a second hand book stall. There is also a shared early history with Swiss vignerons with the Geelong region. I wrote a longer piece on the history of wines in Geelong in Victoria, here.

Yeringberg’s “Yeringberg” label is a left bank Bordeaux style blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot, in that order. But it’s mostly cabernet sauvignon. The 2013 vintage tasted here is utterly delicious, fully mature and in its drinking prime. There are aromas of blackcurrants, firm tannins, cedar and very long length. While I have previously favoured Yarra Yering as producing the Yarra Valley’s leading cabernet sauvignon blends, my tastes appear to have now evolved to favour Yeringberg and Mount Mary based on more recent tastings. While this wine is in its prime, In the case of Yeringberg typically, do not drink their red wines too young. The polishing of edges that time brings is worth the wait. Buy this wine if you can and drink it over the next 6 to 8 years. For more recent reviews of Yeringberg from the 2019 vintage, read here Review Rating: Outstanding (★★★★★, 95 points).
