This wine review is of Guigal’s Côtes du Rhône (CDR) from the 2022 vintage. The wine is a blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre and from the southern Rhône Valley in France. Always a reliable choice and widely available, Guigal’s CDR 2022 vintage has a workman like character to it. It has spirity aromas of red and dark fruits, and is a little rough in its first impression. With time, regional lavender and dried herb bush characters emerge. The palate has savoury red plums, supported by chalky tannins and its spicy characters settle. Oak characters are not obvious. Choose this wine if you are wanting a robust, southern French red showing regional style at a modest price. It is suitable for current drinking over the next 2 to 4 years. You can read a review of the 2020 vintage of Guigal’s CDR here, where I managed to convey a similar impression of that vintage in fewer words. Guigal’s 2020 Crozes-Hermitage is also a good choice.
