This wine review is of Axle’s chenin blanc from the Darling region of South Africa and the 2023 vintage. Chenin blanc is South Africa’s pinnacle white variety, and it comes in all manner of expressions. Old vine expressions are sought after. The South African style of chenin tends to be fruitier, and more chardonnay like, than Vouvray and also drier. It can be a smart value choice. This wine has aromas of pineapple and ripe stone fruit. The palate is medium to full bodied and viscous. It has the chenin blanc characterter of subtle acidity that builds intensity with time. A wooly character emerges on the finish.
