Jean-Paul's Shiraz Cabernet Review

Jean-Paul’s Shiraz Cabernet 2021

This wine is from micro producer Jean-Paul de Castella Wines in the hilly region south of Yea.  The altitude here is around 300 metres. After a seeming gap of several years, this producer returns with a top 2021 blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.  The style here is cool climate and earthy. It is closer in resemblance to a St Joseph or Hawkes Bay syrah or perhaps a Craiglee shiraz in Sunbury.  The shiraz contribution may be better labelled as syrah. In the glass, the 2021 vintage has herbal and leafy aromatics. On the palate, the wine is earthy and delicate with long length on the finish. It is more expressive of syrah than cabernet.  This very good wine is drinking well now. Review Rating: Very Good (★★★★, 90 points). Website: Jean Paul’s Vineyard. Tasted: December 2024.
