From Kamptal in Austria, this wine review is of the 2019 vintage of Hirsch Ried Heiligenstein. This is a minerally, complex and intense expression of dry riesling. For the Australian reader, think of a stonier, more mineral and less fruit driven version of Clare Valley riesling, with incredible complexity. In the glass, it has aromas of smoke, stones and minerals. The palate is dry, light to medium bodied and the alcohol is 13.0. Its general impression is lean, tense and complex and finishes on its stoney, mineral character rather than fruit. This is an outstanding and complex riesling that will reward cellaring for a decade or more. Rating: ★★★★☆. Tasted: October 2022. Website: https://www.weingut-hirsch.at/en/.
