Noster Criança Priorat 2008

This is a very enjoyable wine indeed.  For those less familiar with its region of origin, namely Priorat, it is a sparsely populated region in the hills behind Tarragona, which itself is along the Spanish Mediterranean coast south of Barcelona.  Plantings typically range from 70 to 700 metres above sea level.  This wine from Noster is a blend of 55% grenache and 45% carignan and is of considerable interest.  It has complex and attractive aromatics of chocolate, earth, soy, dark plum skins and iron filings.  The palate has flavours reminding of currant, plum and game meats, with crunchy pomegranate notes intermingled.  The length on the finish verges on long, and in terms of quality, this wine is certainly very good on the grounds of its balance, length and complexity.  It’s enough to make me want to look more closely at Priorat.
