I am a card carrying supporter of English sparkling wine. They can achieve an acidity and balance that resembles Champagne generally and the style of many “grower” Champagnes more specifically. There are some exceptions, but mostly they surpass local offerings. Their chief problem, I think, is that they are hard to find on Australian shelves. Like the erroneous reputation of English food, perhaps old prejudices die hard.
This English sparkling is from Nyetimber (the 2006 Classic Cuvee) and has fine bubbles and a very pale lemon colour in the glass. It has aromatics of biscuit, lemon and a touch of vegemite. Medium length and a creamy mousse on the palate ably supports its high acid and lemon driven characters. Its the good acidity that gets me. This is a very good sparkling wine that frankly warrants an importer.
