W. Gisselbrecht Schiefferberg Single Vineyard Riesling 2013

This wine, an Alsace riesling, was spotted for sub $20 at a big box retailer. ¬†And it’s pretty good too. ¬†It has quite pungent lemon, metal and stone aromatics. ¬†The palate is about line and length, with very high acid helping cut through its mid weight body. ¬†Some fruit sweetness and the high acidity helpsContinue reading “W. Paringa Estate Mornington Peninsula Riesling 2004

The Mornington Peninsula is firmly wedded now to pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot gris. ¬†But there’s still a smattering of other varieties planted for the curious. ¬†Here for example is a riesling from Paringa Estate on the Peninsula (better known for pinot noir and perhaps shiraz), bottled under screw cap and now with 13 yearsContinue reading “Paringa Estate Mornington Peninsula Riesling 2004”

Patina Scandalous Riesling 2014

This is another really good riesling release from Patina in Orange. ¬†It has lemon and orange rind aromas, while the palate is off dry with a racy palate and good length. ¬†In short, a very good off dry style riesling. ¬†I’m still not convinced by the labelling; this is a wine to be taken seriously.Continue reading “Patina Scandalous Riesling 2014”

Taylors Clare Valley Riesling 2016

This is a good Clare Valley riesling release from Taylors. ¬†From the 2016 vintage, it has resounding aromatics of florals, lemon and lime. ¬†The palate is dry, medium bodied and wraps its racy acidity with plenty of Clare typicity of flavour. ¬†I’d buy this. ¬†(Alc: 12.3%, Region: Clare Valley, Rating: Good, Drink: now to 2031)¬†Continue reading “Taylors Clare Valley Riesling 2016”

In search of trocken; Reichsrat von Buhl Trocken Riesling Pfalz 2014

There is a word to be coined to describe the combination of despair, resignation and exasperation that is the discovery that a German wine that you thought would be dry, is in fact is off dry or defiantly ¬†sweeter than that. ¬†Let’s run with trockened. ¬†The fear of trockening (sorry, I did say I wouldContinue reading “In search of trocken; Reichsrat von Buhl Trocken Riesling Pfalz 2014”

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Riesling 2016

The Lodge Hill riesling from Jim Barry is a reliable performer.  Riesling and the Clare Valley are a benchmark wine style.  This example is particularly linear, with driving lemon and floral aromatics.  Its structure on the palate is racy and citric, with a dry finish.  Perfect for seafood and warmer weather.  Rating: Good Read more:jimbarry.com
