Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

This is another very good vintage of Bowen Estate’s cabernet sauvignon.  It still tastes youthful, and would benefit from a further few years in the cellar to reveal its full charms.  Its aromatics are a pure fruited expression of blackcurrant, chocolate and earth.  The palate has warmer climate Coonawarra cabernet notes of dark olives andContinue reading “Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005”

Reschke Bos Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

This is a very left bank Bordeaux like wine from Reschke in Coonawarra. Developing in character, it has an awkward start with some clumsy sweet oak characters, before settling into very pleasant blackcurrant and earthy aromatics. I did wonder about a light seasoning of brett. The palate is still unfurling with between a medium andContinue reading “Reschke Bos Cabernet Sauvignon 2002”

Katnook Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

2010 was a good vintage in Coonawarra, with an early harvest following above average summer temperatures.  Katnook’s Odyssey cab sav is a benchmark from the region, and so it’s always interesting to look in on.  The 2010’s aromatics are typical Coonawarra with mint, eucalyptus and spearmint characters dominant and blackcurrant lurking at the back.  Cloves,Continue reading “Katnook Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2010”

Jim Barry Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A multi-regional blend of cabernet sauvignon sourced from Coonawarra and the Clare Valley.  This wine (also tasted in the tropics where it may have been given a light cooking) tasted a little jumpy.   Blackcurrant, ribena and blueberry characters feature.  The palate is towards full bodied and is sweet fruited in impression.  Pleasant enough.  Rating:Continue reading “Jim Barry Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2014”

Two cabernets; Ring.Bolt Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and Hollick The Bard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Since attending a magnificent Margaret River v Coonawarra tasting a few weeks ago (you can read about it here), the contrasts of these two regions are front of mind. Hollick The Bard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, CoonawarraThis wine is more open than many Coonawarras, but its young firm tannins suggest it will close down soon.  BlackcurrantContinue reading “Two cabernets; Ring.Bolt Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and Hollick The Bard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014”

An outstanding Margaret River v Coonawarra cabernet tasting

I attended recently a wonderful benchmarking exercise of Margaret River and Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and cabernet blends.  A number outstanding wines were presented.  Tasted blind, there were more similarities between the regions than differences.  Nonetheless, to draw out the tasting distinctions, the Coonawarra wines tended to have a slightly fresher acidity profile, and in theContinue reading “An outstanding Margaret River v Coonawarra cabernet tasting”
