This is a lovely almost primeur style of Bourgueil from Amirault in the Loire Valley in France. Bourgueil is among a picturesque group of “middle France” appellations in the Loire Valley producing cabernet franc, and includes Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Saumur and Saumur-Champigny. Famously, at the other end of the valley, red Sancerre is in fact pinot noir. The 2024 vintage of Amirault’s Cote 50 Bourgueil has aromas of plums and plum skins. The customary twigginess of cabernet franc is in the background here. Its most attractive feature however is its fleshy, moreish fruit on the palate, freshened by high acidity.
