Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Review

Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten 2022 Review

This wine is from Dr Loosen and is a “grosses gewächs” dry riesling from Mosel in Germany.  The “grosses gewächs” label means the wine sits at the summit of the German wine quality pyramid and is “dry”. The latter description, though not in this case of course, is still capable of unexpected side tours with German riesling. The German VDP association (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) has a useful summary of this difficult to remember classification here.

Returning to this wine, it is from the well known ürziger würzgarten (spice garden) vineyard, the equally well known Mosel producer Dr Loosen and the 2022 vintage. It’s a top flight example of German dry riesling.  The wine has aromas of stones and smoke.  The palate is more of a journey. It starts as quite light bodied and takes a while to get going, and there is early alarm with a lack of intensity despite obvious complexity.  However, with time in the glass, the mineral characters grow more mineral, taking on a dusty stone character. As is usual for riesling, lemon characters emerge and the acidity is very high.  With time, lovely length and intensity appear; predicted, but nonetheless its origin uncertain.  You do really need to wait with this wine for it to show all of its dimensions.  Drink it over the next decade.  Review Rating: Very Good (★★★★, 91 points).
