There aren’t many producers of gamay in Australia. Most are higher quality expressions, compared with the considerable variation in Beaujolais. This gamay, labelled as “gamay noir”, is from top Australian producer De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley. It’s a good example of the style. The 2023 vintage is a purple in colour with aromas of struck match and smoke. The palate is red fruited, crisp and has a chalky texture. While this wine doesn’t have the minerality of Beaujolais, it does have the red fruited accents. Its crisp acidity will suit cold cuts. Ready to drink now. The price is around A$34. Review Rating: Good (★★★, 88 points). Website: De Bortoli Wines. Tasted: November 2024.
