Hermitage sits at the quality pinnacle of the northern Rhône valley, reflected in its price. This Hermitage wine is from Paul Jaboulet Aîné, is made from 100% syrah (shiraz) and is from the 2020 vintage. This is a challenging wine in some respects, due to its very intense character. It opens to powerful aromas of red and dark fruits, with the meatiness and savoury characters of Hermitage in the background. The palate is full bodied and intense. Its 15.5% alcohol adds spirit to its lavender herbal characters and adds lift and intensity to its red fruit expression. There are tannins, but they are hidden. There isn’t the softness of fruit seen in new world shiraz styles to balance things out and the lasting impression of this wine is one of intensity. This Hermitage is in its youth, and would benefit from 4 to 5 years in bottle. Rating: Good for now (★★★, 87 points). Website: Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Tasted: June 2024.
