Château Les Ormes de Pez is situated in Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux. This estate was classified as a “Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel” in the 2003 classification of these wines, a classification which was annuled. The wine does not appear among the most recent 2020 Cru Bourgeois classification, based on the detailed, and not unuseful, Vins de Bordeaux information here. I haven’t yet formed a view on the 2019s as a vintage, though vintage reports are favourable. I prefer this one.
2019 vintage
The 2019 vintage of Château Ormes de Pez has subtle, but not brooding, aromas of blackcurrants and cedar. The palate is medium bodied and a correct expression of the Saint-Estêphe left bank style. Its defining feature, at least initially, is its firm, fine and drying tannins. It could provide a case study of cabernet sauvignon “horseshoe” tannins across the palate. The wine finishes with long length. As can be the case with better wines, it puts on layers with time in the glass, plumping the wine with an extra dimension of fruit and length on the finish. With this development in glass, I would suggest decanting is necessary. The wine will likely improve with cellaring for another 3 to 5 years, and then expect an 8 to 10 year best drinking window. Review Rating: Very Good (★★★★, 90 points). Website: Château Ormes de Pez. Tasted: March 2024.
