I smiled immediately upon tasting this wine in a slightly sheepish Matt Preston, well I am just going to eat all of this contestant’s dish, sort of a way. Applied to a wine that is. Which of course was also not eaten on a television show, nor in fact eaten. So this comparison is not really particularly accurate at all, but here we are. The point of this wine from Punt Road’s Airlie Bank Range is, I suspect, to be likeable and push a few edges to that end, and it achieves exactly that. The fruit was fermented in two portions – the first destemmed and fermented on skins for 3 months. The second was fermented on bunches for two weeks then pressed. In the glass, the result is delicious. There are aromatics of stones, citrus and grapefruit. The palate is mid weight, fresh and rather gluggable. You may have to fossick around to find this one as only 105 dozen were made.
