Francis Blanchet Calcite Pouilly Fumé 2014

April is a beautiful month in Melbourne; calm, the worst of the summer heat is gone and the cold is rousing but not yet threatening.  Perfect for sitting outside and tasting some whites.  This white is from Francis Blanchet in Pouilly Fumé, and I’ve previously enjoyed the 2012 (reviewed here).  Pouilly Fumé is one of the Loire Valley’s most famous appellations, producing white wines from sauvignon blanc with aromatics that are said to be flinty (thus the name fumé).  The 2014 vintage has aromatics of lemons, stones and, yes, some flintiness.  The palate is crisp and smart, with yellow grapefruit characters and good balance.  Another good release from this producer.
