The vineyard for this wine is situated on basalt loam over limestone in the Orange region, which one assumes given the name “Fossil Hill” has some fossils here and there amongst it. While unable to detect any long gone creatures of the sea in this wine, it is a rather perfectly pleasant shiraz viognier. It has aromatics of spiced baked plums, a touch of leather and wood spice. The palate is balanced and recalls to mind individual packets of hotel plum jam and wood spice. The former I recognise is a rather peculiar recollection, but I do not mean it as a pejorative. It builds length in the glass with air, and provides enjoyable enough drinking.
