I taste so few poor Australian chardonnays these days, the grape finding plausible and interesting expressions in most of Australia’s cooler wine regions. This chardonnay made by Gerald Naef from Patina Wines in Orange, like others from this region, shows a combination of ripe fruit and yet quite firm acidity from its cooler growing climate. It has aromatics of lemon, yellow grapefruit, hints of cashew and stones. The palate has an impression of quite high acidity, but is balanced by ripe but cool climate flavours of some intensity, reminding of yellow grapefruit and lemon. There’s good length on the finish. Overall, a good chardonnay.
