It’s not every day that I try a wine made from the grape variety of refosco. I don’t imagine many in Australia produce it. A look at the texts shows that it is a native of north eastern Italy and is said to have its best expression in Colli Orientali del Friuli. Quite deeply coloured for the Daylesford region, this 6 year old wine has aromatics of olive, peppermint, bruised red plums and deli meats. It sort of reminded me of fresh prosciutto. The palate has cherry and game meat characters. I won’t say it bowled me over, but it’s certainly a balanced wine that seems to have found a home far away from Colli Orientali.
