It’s not particularly in vogue at the moment, but Australia does ripe shiraz styles well. In reality, it is Australia’s contribution to the serious wines of the world; the quality is unquestionable. Tim Adams’ Aberfeldy Shiraz from the 2009 vintage fits the ripe paradigm, but it is not overdone, as it achieves a pleasing balance and length on the palate. The aromatics are classic Clare Valley shiraz – dark plums, cedar, black cherry, dried herbs and vanilla from the new American oak it spent 24 months in. The flavours carry through to the palate, which has both long length and an effortless class to it. I could drink this all day, and I suspect it will age and improve for years.
