For less than $20, there’s some good sparkling wine to be had here from Simonnet-Febvre. Crémant de Bourgogne is made using the traditional method (i.e. the same method as used in Champagne), but is made outside of the Champagne region, in this case in Burgundy. The blend is 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir. Thus using Champagne grapes and not being particularly far from Champagne geographically, not surprisingly, the result tastes a lot like Champagne. I tasted this wine blind, and guessed it as a well made brut release from a lower end Champagne producer.
Were I an Australian sparkling wine producer, I would be worried by this sort of quality sparkling wine at this sort of price. As a wine consumer though, I’m pretty happy to have found it. Bright, pale in intensity and lemon in colour. Small bubbles, and considerable persistence. The aromatics are clean, with developing notes of yeast, lemon and old wood. On the palate, this Crémant is dry, with medium-high acid, a creamy mousse, light-medium body and flavours of lemons, minerals, stones, and residual notes of lemon. This is a good value, good sparkling wine, and I’m happy to have stumbled across it. Good
