It wasn’t long ago that I mused that I had seen few wines from the cool climate (due to altitude, not latitude) Orange region in New South Wales. This position has changed in recent months, and based on this wine, the region shows some potential with pinot gris in addition to its other merits.
From vineyards situated at more than 600m above sea level, the 2012 pinot gris is a pale lemon in colour. It has between medium and pronounced intensity aromatics of pear, apple and stone. The palate has medium length, between medium and high acidity, and dominant flavours of pear and apple. This is the sort of restrained and balanced pinot gris style that I enjoy, not being blousy at all. Good
