The Yea Valley, situated to the north of the Yarra Valley is certainly beautiful, if not particularly well known as a wine region. The 2008 shiraz from Sedona Estate is hand picked and saw 20 months of seasoned French and new American oak. The result is an almost old fashioned style of rich plummy cool climate shiraz, that I very much enjoyed. It reminded me of an older Mt Langhi Ghiran shiraz that I had tried that was made in a more robust style, although without the price tag of that region defining wine.
This shiraz presents as a deep ruby in colour. Powerful licorice and plum aromas are complemented by quite long length, plums, licorice and spice on the palate. This is a near full bodied wine that can be drunk anytime over the next 5 years or more. I questioned whether is wine was sufficiently complex to merit a very high score, but I think the quality of its fruit expression and length on the palate means that it does. Rating: Very Good.
