Seppelt’s St Peters Shiraz from Great Western is a classic Australian cool climate shiraz, and you can read tasting notes back to 1984 on their website. 1999 as a vintage in the Grampians region was very solid for shiraz, with a warm and dry summer and a cool autumn.
Tasted in 2012, the wine had a medium intensity brick like colour. Matured in French oak, its aroma supported its cooler climate origins – pepper, green peppercorns, plums, black cherry, spice, Christmas cake, and a touch of grass. It was relatively muted in terms of intensity of aromatic expression. On the palate, the wine was very good without hitting the ball out of the park – medium length, tannins and acid supported the plum and pepper flavours well. On this tasting, I would suggest the wine is ready to drink now. 89 points (very good)
