Domaine Ostertag

Domaine Ostertag Sylvaner 2019

Sylvaner is not generally thought of as a classic grape variety and it is seldom seen on Australian shores.  Its origins are Central European. I could repeat learning, but Jancis Robinson publishes a comprehensive summary here that contains all necessary information about the grape variety. Having an open mind did not assist my tasting in this case. Despite this wine being from a top Alsace producer, Domaine Ostertag, and therefore among the most likely candidates to make the best of the grape variety, the wine has aromas that remind of an unlikely combination of glue (or is it hay?), herbs and lemons.  The palate is dry and viscous.  It drinks well enough. At times, the wine presents with echoes of riesling and gewurtztraminer but unfortunately the highlights of neither.  Rating: Acceptable (★★, 81 points). Website: Domaine Ostertag. Tasted: July 2023.
