Greenock Creek Mataro 2015

Greenock Creek Mataro

This wine is a straight mataro from Greenock Creek in the Barossa Valley.  Mataro is a synonym for mourvèdre, the latter being in more general worldwide usage. The alcohol is listed in the low 14s and is a pleasing respite from the very high alcohol shiraz wines of this producer.  In the glass, the wine has aromas of spice, game and cedar.  The palate is full bodied, the acidity noticed and the flavours are quite savoury and remind of game meats.  This is more polished and the fruit richer than an archetypal Bandol, but this is as should be expected.  Overall, this is a very good mataro/mourvèdre suitable for current drinking over the next few years.  Rating: Good to Very Good (★★★☆).  Reviewed: April 2022.
