Wendouree Shiraz Malbec 2018 Wine Review

Wendouree is the leading red wine producer in Australia’s Clare Valley. Wendouree continues their mystique with a feted mailing list and absence of a website or marketing. I suspect they could sell their entire vintage this way, year in year out. Wendouree’s wines also find their way on to local restaurant lists and some retailers.

Wendouree’s wines are for long ageing but it is nonetheless useful to check in on them in their youth. Their 2018 shiraz malbec is a shiraz dominated blend. It opens to a youthful spiced and spiky nose. The palate is medium to full bodied, the acidity towards high and the tannins light to medium and very fine in texture. This is a wine that is still coming together. Its highish acidity and youthful nose on their own might point to a lack of harmony, but the palate in fact is very harmonious, balanced and elegant and these are the wine’s key attributes. So it is very much a wine where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The finish is long. I would suggest cellaring for another 5 to 7 years and then drinking over the next decade or longer. Rating: Very Good to Outstanding. Website: Vivino; Wine Searcher. Reviewed: November 2021.
