This wine review is of the 2016 vintage of Gartelmann’s “Diedrich” shiraz from Orange. It is a powerful, rich wine that proved delicious drinking. Orange is one of Australia’s cooler regions despite what its 33c latitude might otherwise suggest. This is due to its inland location on the western side of the Great Dividing Range and its altitude ranging from 600m. In the glass, the wine has aromas of game and spice, is oaked (some new, some second and third use, a mixture of French and American), has a full body, medium tannins (fine) and medium acidity. It finishes with long length. This wine is a celebration of fruit and its alcohol is high, but it has sufficient acidity and tannic structure to provide balance. It is ready to drink now and over the next 5-8 years. Rating: Very Good. Website: producer; wine-searcher.com. Source: Sample. Reviewed: February 2021.
