Thierry Germain Saumur Champigny 2018 Wine Review

This wine review is of a high quality Saumur Champigny cabernet franc from Thierry Germain and the 2018 vintage.  Various expressions of cabernet franc are produced by Thierry and this is the “Domaine des Roches Neuves”.  The first thing to note is the deep purple colour of the wine in the glass, confirming the 2018 vintage as a warmer vintage in the Loire Valley.  This wine is certainly not a bistro style crisp and early drinking rendition of Saumur Champigny.  It has fresh, exuberant red raspberry fruit aromas on the nose.  Fermented in stainless steel and then aged in stainless steel and old oak, the palate is dry, medium bodied with moderate alcohol (13.0) and interestingly for a cabernet franc and perhaps due to the vintage, does not have herbal notes.  The palate has mid weight firm tannins and quite long length (25 seconds plus). Overall, this is a high end expression of Saumur Champigny that will suit current drinking or short cellaring for 4 to 5 years.  Rating: Very Good.  Website: wine-searcher.com.
