It’s exciting to see mencia is now being grown in Australia and this is the first Australian one that I’ve had a close look at in bottle. Mencia is the grape variety from Bierzo in north western Spain where it is capable of greatness. In d’Arenberg’s hands in McLaren Vale, the 2017 vintage has a juicy and youthful aroma of jubes and pastille. On the palate, it’s dry, has refreshing acidity and is fruit driven (only old oak is used). There’s good length on the finish and it will suit drinking in its youth. Rating: Good. Abv: 13.2%. Price: $29. Source: Sample.
