Here are a couple of delicious Volnays tasted over the Christmas period. These are short notes only; happily I was too busy drinking them.
Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 2011
Feminine and alluring, the 2011 vintage tasted has delicious cherry and earth characters on the nose and palate. Beguiling and a conversation stopper. (Region: Volnay, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, Rating: Very Good, Drink: now to 2019)
Louis Jadot Hospices de Beaune Premier Cru Volnay Cuvée Blondeau 2009
Tasted with the Volnay 2011, this wine is immediately firmer and more linear. Serious in intent, it has a core of minerality that supplements its cherried nuances. Whilst I enjoyed the primary exuberance of the Domaine Nicolas Rossignol (primary for Burgundy that is), the slow unwind of the 2009’s tightly wound core suggests it will see greater heights. (Region: Volnay, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, Rating: Very Good, Drink: now to 2021)
