Planting alternative varieties that are suited to Australia’s warmest viticultural regions makes a lot of sense. The Murray Darling and Riverland are not places to make pinot noir, nor many of the French classics (putting to one side the classics of the south). Fresh from tasting an interesting montepulciano from this producer (see my review here), here’s a saperavi. Saperavi will of course roll off few tongues. It’s from Georgia (near Russia) and produces a dark skinned grape that ripens late. A couple of local producers have it here and there. This rendition, grown on the soils of the Murray Darling, is black in the glass, with clarion like aromatics of raisin, prune, fig and cherry sauce. The palate has reminds of sweet currants, and is powerful in its fruitful expression. At $14, this is another wine that punches above its weight.
