Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Bowen Estate, or “the Bowen”, continues to be a hidden gem of the Coonawarra wine region.  The mailing list price for their new release cabernet sauvignon has barely budged from when I joined it many years ago ($23) and is now around $26.  If you are able, I would suggest cellaring the cabernet sauvignon releases for a decade to show their best.

In this case, the 2004 vintage presents an emphatic argument in favour of Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon.  Dark in colour, it has aromatics of blackcurrant, cedar and cigar box.  The palate is balanced with long length, and similar flavours, supplemented by a touch of licorice and reminders of dark ripe cherries in season.  This is an excellent release from Bowen Estate, and probably performs at double its price point.

Rating: Very Good (maybe even towards Outstanding), Abv: 14.5%, Price: $20s, Source: sample, Vendors: http://www.wine-searcher.com/, Website: http://www.bowenestate.com.au/, Tasted: 2015
