Montigoli Amarone della Valpolicella 2010

There isn’t a lot of Amarone in Australia at a mid $20s price point.  Happily, this wine is a solid introduction to the style.  It’s made from a blend of dried corvina and rondinella (but not molinara) grapes, as is required by the Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG rules.  A quick look at Vinodiversity confirms my impression that these are seldomnly sighted grape varieties in Australia.   A deep intensity ruby in colour, the wine has aromatics that remind of earth, plums and a sultana and raisin mix.  The palate is dry, full bodied and has a fleshy and attractive mouthfeel, with some plump and ripe extract providing interest.  There’s a savoury edge too, with a bitter almond finish to accompany the plum, earth and raisin flavours.  This is a very drinkable wine that pleases for the price.  Good
