Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Zinfandel Mendocino County 2011

Zinfandel is not a grape variety that I see a lot of, and this offering was a lot more interesting than the bruising monster that is sometimes assumed to be a fellow traveller with this particular grape variety. ¬†This example is from Mendocino County AVA that is towards the northern end of the larger North Coast AVA that itself covers a substantial area north of San Francisco bay. ¬†The wine is a medium intensity ruby colour in the glass, and has developing aromatics of cedar, bramble fruit, blackberry, mulberry and butter. ¬†On the palate, it’s dry, with medium acid, quite assertive Italianesque tannins, and flavours of cedar wood, plum, blackberry and mulberry, in a full bodied expression. ¬†There’s perhaps a dollop too much of oak expression, but there’s length, balance and a concentration of black fruit flavours that I found quite attractive. ¬†Worth a look. ¬†Good
