We skip back from Margaux to Pauillac with this review, a long standing favourite value wine, the Les Tourelles de Longueville. Les Tourelles is the second wine of Baron Pichon Longueville. I have found one importer in Australia, but only it would appear of one vintage. This label warrants wider interest in my humble opinion.
The 1996 vintage here is garnet in colour, with some yellow and fade around the rim. It has aromatics of blackcurrant, old leather, tea tree smoke, aged deli meats, pencil shavings, a hint of tomato paste and some hints of autumn decay. The palate is balanced, with blackcurrant and cigar box notes dominant, together with tannins that are fully resolved. Probably slightly past its best, the ’96 Les Tourelles nonetheless shows balance, complexity, length and interest and is very enjoyable and is typical Pauillac in style. Rating: Good to Very Good.
