A fairly unserious, if memorable label. I understand the 2008 vintage of the “Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch” shiraz from the Strathbogie Ranges (a pretty region north of the Yarra Valley) received some acclaim. Tasted blind, the 2009 vintage reviewed here did not impress. It has simple aromatics of pepper, plums, spirit and char. The palate has cooked plum flavours and gives a thin impression with at times spiky alcohol, perhaps because of the 2009 vintage – the last of the drought vintages in the 2000s. The wine reminded of a cooked and rough commercial McLaren Vale shiraz, which is not entirely where I hoped it might land. Overall, this is a disappointing wine that is unbalanced and short on enjoyment to my taste. Poor
