Petaluma Riesling 1999

I was really quite impressed by this riesling from Petaluma with grapes sourced from the Clare Valley. I sometimes find Clare Valley riesling, particularly in its youth, a little monotonous and ungiving in its flavour profile – with steely lemon flavours often predominant. However, this wine is no longer youthful, having reached its thirteenth year since vintage, and it seems more relaxed.

The wine presents as a pale gold in colour. Developed aromatics of lemon, lemon curd, flowers, kerosene and perhaps a touch of lanoline feature. Balance, good length and lemon flavours make up the palate. It has not yet developed the toasty flavours of a very old riesling. This is a very enjoyable Clare Valley riesling nearing its drinking prime. 89 points
