Blends are underrated in my view. This wine from Topper’s Mountain is an ostensibly unlikely blend of chardonnay, gewurtztraminer, petit manseng and sauvignon blanc. Yet, here I am typing away that I quite enjoyed it. One sensed that the powerfully aromatic and flavoured gewurtz was keen to front run given any opportunity to do so, but it performed its team role well. The aromatics are of grapefruit, lemon, musk sticks (perhaps they are still sold?) and lychee. The palate is balanced by some good acidity, presumed to be the high acid petit manseng’s contribution to the blend, and leaves refreshing reminders of grapefruit, lemon, lychee, honey and grass. Overall, this is a balanced wine with some good length. In short, it works.
