This is a fairly typical expression of Rioja from Marqués de Murrieta and the 2020 vintage. Rioja, for the unacquainted, produces savoury styles of red wine that are mostly tempranillo and grenache blends. They can be very good value. Modern Rioja can be quite variable in style – from fruity, to savoury through to oaky – but the average quality is above average. Rioja is a region that in Australia is not particularly well known and would tend to be encountered by the adventurous, the expert or the Spanish restaurant patron, whereas my experience is that in other places such as the United Kingdom, it is well known. This Rioja from Marqués de Murrieta and the 2020 vintage has aromas of cedar, balsamic, plums and earth. The palate is savoury, with some plums and earth, and the wine finishes on old wood characters. This is a gentle Rioja that will suit current drinking. The blend in this case is 82% tempranillo, 7% mazuelo (carignan), 8% graciano and 3% garnacha (grenache). Review Rating: Good to Very Good (★★★☆, 88 points). Website: Marqués de Murrieta. Tasted: September 2026.
