Sangiovese is a grape that appears yet to find its true place in Australian soil and Lark Hill is a winery that produces some very good wine indeed. It is interesting then to see a sangiovese from Lark Hill, grown at their “Dark Horse” vineyard at 600 metres in the Murrumbateman subregion of the Canberra District.
The wine is youthful and fruit driven with plum, sour (but ripe) cherry and deli meat characters, the latter reminding initially almost of mourvedre. The palate has similar flavour characters, with gentle tannins for sangiovese. Pleasingly, the wine improves with air and takes on some balanced earth and pepper notes. Decanting suggested.
