Durbanville Hills Rhinofields Pinotage 2011

Advertisements

Pinotage is the result of an ostensibly unlikely crossing of pinot noir and cinsaut that has proven popular in South Africa.  It’s a particularly saturated purple in colour, with aromatics of plum, earth, glazed cherry, spice, ash and smoke.  The palate is quite a powerful expression of pinotage, with a full body, and an earthy and smokey short to medium length finish.  I found this wine did not achieve a balance in its taste profile that fully came together – the fruit characters seemingly at odds with some very earthy and smokey characters.  Acceptable
