Mission Hill Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Okanagan Valley 2013

I quite liked the 2013 Mission Hill reserve cabernet sauvignon.  A touch more than the 2011 (see my review here) but both are still very pleasant.  The 2013 has a classic medium bodied cabernet expression perhaps without showing any “above and beyond” characters through the palate.  Tobacco, cedar, leather and dried herbs round things up.  Correct…Continue readingMission Hill Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Okanagan Valley 2013

Balbas Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2010

Next stop, we venture overseas to Spain in the Ribera del Duero.  The region’s principal grape variety is tempranillo, which usually expresses itself in a more powerful guise than Rioja to the north.  This particular wine from Balbas is a blend of 90% tempranillo and 10% cabernet.  Built to last, it sees 18 months in…Continue readingBalbas Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2010

The McAlister 2006

Fresh from my glowing review of the 2010 vintage of The McAlister reviewed here (see also the 2005 reviewed here), I managed to snaffle a bottle of the 2006 vintage of the McAlister to try.  I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: no website, no publicity (well, not that I have seen), from a…Continue readingThe McAlister 2006

Château Caronne Ste-Gemme 1975

There is no particularly good reason why a cru bourgeois from 1975 should prove drinkable in 2016 (for more on the cru bourgeois see my post here). But such is the beauty of wine that it is always worth a try, particularly when the wine is from the left bank of Bordeaux.  The 1975 Caronne Ste-Gemme…Continue readingChâteau Caronne Ste-Gemme 1975

The McAlister 2010

This wine is something of an enigma.  Having tasted it twice now (the first was the 2005 vintage reviewed here) my unequivocal conclusion is that it deserves a place among Australia’s best cabernet sauvignon wines.  Yet little seems to be written about it, it is from a largely unknown wine region (east Gippsland) and bottles…Continue readingThe McAlister 2010

Yeringberg Cabernet 2011

Yeringberg’s 2011 shiraz was good (reviewed here), so I hoped that their 2011 cabernet sauvignon might be good too.  My logic is choosing good producers (which Yeringberg is) in bad years (which 2011 is).  A cru bourgeois in style, the 2011 Yeringberg cabernet has aromatics of blackcurrant and earth.  The palate is balanced with fresh…Continue readingYeringberg Cabernet 2011
