This wine is worth your attention. Dry semillon is Australia’s unique white wine contribution to the world. This particular semillon is from top producer Rockford from the Barossa Valley, rather than the Hunter Valley. Usually the difference between these two regions is about one degree of alcohol, and a touch more ripeness in Barossa semillon. The Hunter Valley has the higher reputation, mostly due to Tyrrell’s outstanding Vat 1 semillon. Returning to the Barossa Valley, this wine is from the 2009 vintage, now 17 years’ ago and is gold in colour. Not gold in a subtle way, but gold. Its aroma reminds of toast and butter, consistent with the style of fully mature Australian dry semillon. Its body is typically light, and its alcohol is 12.5%. The light body character of the wine provides an initial impression that it might lack in substance. However, time in the glass reveals this would be mistaken. Waves of toast, butter, and with time, high acidity emerge to tie the palate together, showcasing considerable complexity. This is an outstanding wine at its peak, and should drink well over the next 6 to 8 years. Review Rating: Very Good to Outstanding (★★★★☆, 94 points). Website: Rockford Wines. Tasted: February 2026.
