From Campo Viejo, this is a sound Rioja Gran Reserva from the 2016 vintage. A Rioja Gran Reserva must be aged for at least 2 years in oak barrels, and 5 years before release. This ageing regime affects the wine’s style considerably, tending to define it. Rioja Gran Reservas can be extremely good value if you are looking for a mature red wine. In the glass, this particular wine is made in a traditional Rioja style with aromas of coconut and vanilla. The palate is medium bodied, gentle, tertiary and supplemented by savoury red fruits. This is a typical, rather than top example of a Rioja Gran Reserva. It’s ready to drink now. Review Rating: Good (★★★, 87 points). Website: Campo Viejo Wines. Tasted: January 2025. Like: Subscribe.
