Anselmo Mendes Alvarinho Contacto Vinho Verde 2017

I drink little Vinho Verde, and this is not typical of the ones I have tried. It is a fuller style, made from, relative to the plethora of obscure Portuguese grape varieties, the more familiar alvarinho (albarino) and is from the Moncao region in Portugal near the Spanish border. Described as “alvarinho contacto”, the wine has distinctive aromas of green unripe mango and to a lesser extent pineapple. The palate is dry with medium acidity, has a medium to full body and, most distinctively, reveals a stony, mineral character that runs through its core with a slightly hard edge. It did not appear to have any CO2. Ready to drink now, this is a pleasant and adaptable wine. Rating: Good. Website: http://www.anselmomendes.pt/en/osvinhos; wine-searcher.com.
